Update from Principal Given

Dear Lakeview Community,

The Placentia-Yorba Linda Unified School District (PYLUSD) is excited to share that Lakeview Elementary School will be one of nine schools participating in an extended-day transitional kindergarten (TK) pilot program during the 2024-2025 school year. This decision follows the successful research and work of a TK task force led by teachers and other staff members to explore the feasibility of extending our existing TK schedule to benefit students and meet the interests of our community. Students who will turn five between September 2, 2024, and June 2, 2025, are eligible to enroll.

Beginning next year, students enrolled in our extended-day TK program will benefit from more time in the classroom as a part of an AM/PM model, attending school for 4 hours and 20 minutes, an increase of 60 instructional minutes, daily.

AM Cohort: 7:50am - 12:10pm

PM Cohort: 9:00am - 1:20pm

*Includes 2 meal offerings

An example of a daily schedule for our extended-day TK classes will be communicated to incoming families before the summer break.

TK is an early kindergarten experience for children that allows young learners to grow in an environment tailored to meet their academic and social-emotional needs. Through the gift of additional time in the extended model, students will have the opportunity to interact with other students during purposeful play, physical education and movement, and many other extended lessons. At Lakeview, our TK program offers many hands-on opportunities to gain confidence with foundational skills. Learning through play is a signature component of the TK program. One will observe students using play dough, wooden blocks, stamp sets and chalkboards to learn letter and number development. Lakeview’s TK program offers engaging science units to bring learning to life. For example, the dinosaur unit includes digging for fossils, examining paper mache dinosaur eggs, measuring footprints and building the giant dinosaur display in class for Open House. Our TK staff use the smaller group ratio to truly know a student’s strengths and areas of growth, along with building a strong partnership with families to collectively build a love for learning.

Lakeview held two successful TK and Kindergarten Parent Information Meetings and Tours in February, with over 30 prospective families. The possibility of a pilot schedule was shared at this time and updated communication has been sent. If you have any questions, I am happy to schedule a meeting on the phone or in person. Please don’t hesitate to call our front office at (714) 986-7190 or email me at [email protected]!

We would love more Lakeview Lion Families! As such, I ask that you please help us spread the word about our new extended-day TK program coming to Lakeview next year. Families may begin the enrollment process at www.pylusd.org/enroll. The community is invited to view our classrooms at Open House on March 21st, beginning at 6pm.

All best,

Stephanie Given
