Lakeview Lion Updates: April 21, 2023

Dear Lakeview Families,

As we enjoy the warm weather and prepare for end of year assessments and activities, I want to pause to say how proud I am of the academic, behavioral and social/emotional growth our students have made! Just this week, I observed a student using positive self-talk to pep her up for a test, another student inviting a peer to play at recess, and I listened to students negotiate, collaborate and synthesize information as a group. To top it off, we ended the week with a visit from two OC Sheriff deputies with their horses at dismissal, an inspiring pep talk from Superintendent, Dr. Matthews at our Sunshine Squad, and the very adorable “sibling pictures” for the yearbook.

Next week, I will be visiting each classroom, grades 3-5 to give a CAASPP test pep talk. I will be reading a book about confidence and practicing a breathing technique to help calm nerves. Our school counselor, Ms. M, and many teachers already incorporate mindful moments and purposeful breathing practices into their classroom. I want to extend the following resource shared by the Children's Center at CSUF, where my daughter attends daycare.
Deep breathing offers many benefits to all. Some of the proven benefits are stress and anxiety reduction, strengthened sustained attention and helps to control emotions. One of the things to keep in mind is it is important to practice deep breathing when the body is in a calm state to learn the techniques properly. Practice will allow you to see what method your child responds to. You can also practice alongside Movelee Monkey at Calming Exercises for Kids: Deep Breathing Brain Break - YouTube or Belly Breathing: Mindfulness for Children - YouTube the video by the Mindfulness Teacher.

ELA, Math and Science CAASPP Testing begins May 1 for students in grades 3-5. Please avoid planned absences during our testing window of May 1-26.

Help us get ready for our PBIS Award application walkthrough on April 28th by asking your child:
-What are the Lakeview School rules? (R.O.A.R.)
-What does R.O.A.R. stand for? (Lions are Respectful, Organized, Accountable and Responsible)
-We will have district personnel on campus to assess our practices, which includes interviewing students and staff.
