Lakeview Lion Updates: May 27, 2022

Dear Lakeview Community,

My heart has been extra heavy since learning about this week’s tragic incident at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX. As a mother of two young children, an educator for the past 16 years and a leader of an elementary school, I have experienced an array of emotions this week. I know that I am not alone in this. I can say with confidence, that neither myself nor my staff take lightly the fact that you entrust us with your most prized possession(s) each day for many hours. We appreciate your continued trust, support and partnership as we seek to provide your child(ren) with a positive, safe, and enriching experience at Lakeview. I echo Dr. Elsasser’s letter sent earlier this week. If you didn’t get a chance to read it, please click HERE.

I want communicate some of the current practices we have in place:

  • We are a closed campus during. All visitors are required to check in at the office with a formal ID. Once cleared through our Raptor system, visitors must wear a visible sticker identifying them as such. The Office Staff keeps a log of time in/out for all visitors.
  • We regularly review and refine our Safe School Plans, including anti-bullying resources and activities, school procedures and communication systems. This includes our emergency messaging system. **Please make sure your AERIES information is up to date.
  • We hold regular safety drills for all students at different times/days of the week so students and staff are prepared in multiple situations. Students know procedures for evacuating areas quickly and quietly.
  • The campus is regularly checked for properly latching gates, doors, locks and block locks, and other safety hazards.
  • We have an assigned School Resource Officer and positive relationships with local law enforcement agencies.
  • We continue to build relationships and awareness with all community stakeholders.
  • We regularly have class meetings and lessons on kindness, managing peer conflict, celebrating differences, and reporting concerns to adults.
  • Students are recognized for demonstrating R.O.A.R.ing behavior (Respectful, Organized, Accountable, Responsible), and redirected through progressive supports.
  • We continue to provide support and assistance for students, staff and family members in social-emotional learning, counseling and wellness.

As we continue to be diligent in these practices, we ask for your teamwork in these endeavors. The communication and collaboration among all stakeholders is greatly valued and appreciated.

  • Ensure your parent/guardian contact information is up-to-date in AERIES. This is directly connected to our emergency messaging system.
  • Ensure your emergency contacts are up-to-date in AERIES. Students will only be released to listed contacts.
  • If an emergency contact is picking up your child from school, please call the Office in advance to notify our staff.
  • As you see appropriate to your family, continue to have conversations with your child(ren) about kindness, situational awareness, safety, and the importance of R.O.A.R.ing behavior.

During difficult times, it helps me to spend time with those who bring me joy. This includes playing with my two children Easten and Elton, cooking dinner with my husband (really, he does the cooking and I just chop veggies), and ensuring we are getting out for family walks in fresh air. I hope you are able to do the same on this long holiday weekend.
